Eudora welty uses grotesque imagery in "the petrified man" very well. but critics will describe the story as being a study of vulgarity modern life. to express her themes through grotesque through she uses the beauty parlor and the freak show as microcosmos of small-town america. she also uses this type of imagery when she writes how it embarrasses mrs. fletcher that a stranger can detect that she is pregnant. this expresses the main theme of unknown as mrs. fletcher doesn't know how a stranger knows that she is pregnant. evidence from the text is "who's mrs. pike?
