why does the narrator throw the umbrella down the sewer after the car accident in "the white umbrella"?

When her piano teacher had given her it, the girl said 'i wish you were my mother'. She threw the umbrella down the sewer when the car accident happened because she thought her real mother was dead (which she wasn't) because she realised that she was letting materialistic things win her over. She also realized how important er mother was to her. She had also told her teacher that she wished the teacher was her mother JUST because of a an umbrella
