05.02 A Native Dilemma

You will look at the painting below and pretend you are a reporter who interviews people on the Trail of Tears.  See the questions below and make your response as if you are the personon the Trail of Tears (use first person).

DON’T FORGET!! – Write as if you ARE the person in the painting for questions 1-3. Explain it from their point of view.

1.             (to the man who is being pointed to in #1 in the picture above) “Sir, please tell us what is happening here and why?” Response from this soldier: The Cherokee left towards their will. Well known Winfield Scott stood thru with seven thousand troops as Cherokee guys, women and youngsters wearing all that they owned commenced an 850-mile march to what is now the kingdom of Oklahoma.

How do the cases relate to what is happening now?”  Response from the Chief: Cherokee Nation v. Georgia. The Cherokee insist that they will be a separate country, and therefore Georgia can't put into effect kingdom legal guidelines inside their territory. was a case in which America incredible courtroom vacated the conviction of Samuel Worcester and held that the Georgia criminal statute that prohibited non-Indians from being gift on Indian lands without a license from the country modified into unconstitutional. 

3.         (to the woman being pointed to in #3)              “Ma’am, please tell us about how this movement is affecting your people, now and for the future.”  Response from the woman: We misplaced a lot of our young kids and our oldest tribe individuals. They died from illnesses, hunger, exposure to climate which includes severe bloodless or intense warmness and mistreatment.
