"The Raisin in the Sun" takes place in 1950s Chicago. The Younger's, an African-American family, has financial difficulties. When Mr. Younger passes away, the family receives a $10,000 inheritance. The family members have different ideas of what to do with the money, but ultimately they put some of the money down on a house in an all-white neighborhood, which just happens to be cheaper. The rest of the money Mama gives to Walter to start a liquor store business. His "business partners" end up wasting the money, so when someone in the all white neighborhood offers to buy out the Younger family, they are tempted. They decide, however, that they cannot encourage people to think that whites are superior to blacks. Even though they need the money, the family show time and time again that they can make do with what they have.
