Because he provided the gift of cigarettes to the drivers, answer “A” does not seem to be appropriate because the provision of a gift is generally not characteristic of one who prefers the company of someone else.  Thus, it does not seem accurate that he would prefer the company of the officers to that of the drivers.  There is no mention in the excerpt as to the reason for accepting to have drinks with the officers; thus, it cannot safely assumed that he only spends time with the officers in order to get cigarettes for the drivers.  As such, “B” is not the appropriate response.  Additionally, “C” does not appear to be the appropriate response because, if he truly looked down on those involved with the war, he would not have accepted to drink with the officers nor would he have provided the gift of Macedonias to the drivers.  However, because the major did extend the invitation to spend time with him and the officers over a drink and because the drivers were given cigarettes, it be safely assumed that he interacts easily with both his superiors and the drivers.  Therefore, “D” is the appropriate response.
