In "The Wind Began to Rock The Grass," Emily Dickinson's use of word position, line length, and capital letters all contribute to the meaning of the poem by putting emphasis on certain words and phrases in order to effectively create a sense of personification. To illustrate, in Dickinson's poem, words such as "wind, grass, menace, thunder, and lightning" are all capitalized. Dickinson purposely capitalizes these words in order to create a sense of personification and put greater emphasis on the actions that each of these entities (wind, grass, leaves, dust, etc.) are taking. Dickinson writes, "[the Wind] threw a Menace at the Earth" (The Wind Began to Rock the Grass 3). By Dickinson previously capitalizing the word "Wind" and also capitalizing the word "Menace" as shown in the line given, the reader's attention is drawn towards these words as they come to life through personification created by capitalizing the first letter of each word as though it were a name. By doing so, Dickinson effectively put emphasis on certain words throughout her poem and thus creates a sense of personification, which, in turn, contributes to the meaning of "The Wind Begun to Rock the Grass."
