In Book I of "The Illiad" by Homer, the Greek camp was under siege by a plague sent by Apollo. Two maidens, Chryseis and Briseis were captured from the Trojan village of which Agamemnon took Chryseis and Achilles took Briseis. Chryseis prayed to Apollo to save them and in response to that, Apollo sent  plague to the Greek camp killing lots of soldiers. When a soothsayer was consulted to find out the cause of the plague, and it was known that Chryseis was the cause, Agamemnon agrees to return her only if Achilles gives Briseis as compensation for his loss of Chryseis. This angered and humilated the proud Achilles and he threatened to withdraw from the war and take back his people, the Myrmidons and leave Troy.
