Characterization is essential because without content or information on the charecters, you would be completly clueless about what is going on in the story. Conflict is key because nobody wants to read a story with no action, without conflict, the story could seem boring and unrealistic. Plot is the base of a story. When?, Where?, Who?, How? This is what makes up the story. The story can seem sloppy, "without a backbone", and readers can get the wrong impresion from the material.
