In “The gift of the Magi”, the above description has some influential descriptions that help set the tone. In the first sentence, it describes how the people COULD have been given a beggar description, but is allowed to have a certain degree of richness. This is influential in the rest of the story, because even though they barely have enough money for bare necessities, they still want to find a way to buy gifts. Also, the description of “a letter-box into which no letter would go”, meant that they were so poor that almost nobody wanted anything to do with them, as they would be ashamed to have relations with them. The card that has the name shows us one of the leading characters in the story.
