I need help with my Literary Analysis. In Act 4, Scene 3 of Othello, by William Shakespeare, Emilia says that she would only cheat on her husband if they had something to gain from it. Or more so if she was told to by her husband in order to move his scheme forward. Emilia would do anything for her husband to show her love for him, despite him not showing the love back, even steal from her employer. She believes it is her duty as a wife to keep Iago as happy and as well off as possible.
When confronted by Desdemona about the topic of cheating, Emilia goes as far as to say, “I would not do such a thing for a joint ring, nor for measures of lawn, nor for gowns, petticoats, nor caps, nor any petty exhibition. But for the whole world—’Uds pity! Who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch?” Othello (4.3.82-85). So long as it would help her husband, whether it would get him the world or the revenge he is oh so desperate for, Emilia would do anything.
She would do anything she could to keep Iago happy and to her it doesn't matter whether she wants to or not. She would break her vow of faith for him. All to try and earn his gaze and gratification. To get him the world, that is the condition she would cheat on Iago under.
