Argos sat and waited for years for his owner to return home when Odysseus's left to fight in the Trojan war. He used to be a dog known for superior hunting skills but these soon deteriorated while his master was gone, due to others neglecting him.

When Odysseus returned home, Argos had only enough strength to recognize his voice before dying. It is, perhaps, the saddest part of the story. I feel as if Argos presented great traits during the time that he waited for his master's return.
