Well in Greek mythology, Prometheus is widely credited with the creation of humanity from clay, and who opposes the gods (particularly Zeus) by stealing fire and offering it to humanity as civilization. Zeus was so enraged by Prometheus' theft of fire that he sentenced him to exile to the east, where he was chained to a rock and Zeus dispatched an eagle to devour the Titan's liver every day, and the liver would grow back for the eagle to eat the next day.
