When someone is putting you down or you receive news, can you look at the bright side? Explain

I understand the importance of looking at the bright side, but being imperfect, I tend to look at the glass half empty. When something negative is right in front of my face, it's hard for me to see past it. With some time, patience, and determination, I might be able to change the way I look at things.
