In this assessment students will select a character from one of the unit stories and develop a character sketch.
CONTEXT: As humans, we are constantly sending and receiving messages about each
other: the way we dress the words we use the actions we take. Knowing how to interpret
these messages is important to valuing others and creating our own identity Authors also
send messages about the characters in their stories As a reader it is our job to understand the characters
by making inferences from the clues that the author gives
PROMPT In this assessment you will select a character from one of the stories within the unit. Then, you
will create a character sketch of the character and include evidence that supports inferences about the
character as a person
a. Provide essential background information about the text/story and compose a strong thesis statement
b. Develop your thesis with evidence including details and description explanation and analysis.
c. Conclude logically by restating your thesis and composing a strong concluding sentence
When you write a character sketch you are trying to introduce the reader to someone. You want the reader
to have a strong mental image of the person to know how the person talks to know the person's
characteristic ways of doing things to know something about the person's value system. Character
sketches only give snapshots of people so you should not try to write a history of the person
