Student Directions: Vignettes are so different from chapters in a typical novel. Each vignette is a story in itself, and so each one must have a creative opening to draw the reader in, over and over. How are you going to write the leads for your vignettes? One way to get some great ideas is to take a page from Sandra Cisneros’ book. Well, several pages . . . Go through the sections you have read of The House on Mango Street again, reading only the lead (the first line or first few lines) of each section. Choose your five favorite leads and write them in the boxes of the left column. In the middle columns, explain what you like about each lead. Finally, write an imitation lead for each lead in the right column, using the topic or topics you’ve chosen for your vignettes! If you like any of your imitation leads, use them in one of your vignettes!
