Can someone please help me with this? Draft and revise a three- to five-minute speech The first writing, or rough draft, of your speech has one goal: to get your ideas down on paper in an orderly manner. For this reason you must follow your outline very closely, filling in each section as you go along. Write a three- to five-minute speech about your chosen topic. When your first draft is finished, you will proceed to the final stages of writing discussed in steps 2 through 5 below. Once you've completed the writing of your speech, read what you have written. Read it silently the first time and then read it aloud to see how it flows. Check to see if you have used any vague or substandard language. If you have, omit any words that are meaningless fillers and correct any usage errors. Time an oral reading of your speech to see whether the speech meets the time constraints (Three to five minutes will be at least 800 words.). Next, consider the tone of your speech. Is it too formal? Is it too informal? A speech of this kind should be more formal than a conversation with friends, but less formal than a professor's lecture to his class. If you have lapsed into conversational language or slang, revise those sections to make your speech more formal. If, however, you have tried to use very formal language and large words so that the speech is very cold and stiff, sounding a little like a vocabulary exercise, revise those sections by replacing the pretentious words with less formal language. Next, consider your audience. Is your speech too difficult for your intended audience? Is it too simplified? Is it too dull? Ask yourself if you would be interested in listening to your own speech. If not, perhaps another draft or another topic is needed. Finally, refine the descriptive language. This refinement is the finishing touch. When you are satisfied with the order, the tone, and the appeal to the audience, then you are ready to examine the individual descriptive passages for accuracy and for interest. Do they paint the image of your ideas as you want it? Or is there some final touching up to be done? Are your adjectives clear and fresh, or vague and dull? Use the following checklist to revise your speech. Re-read your speech. Change vague words into specific ones. Correct any substandard expressions. Omit meaningless fillers. Correct usage errors. Check the tone of your speech. Change any parts that are too formal. Change any parts that are too informal. Correct any conversational or slang expressions. Be sure that the tone of your paper is suitable for its purpose and audience. Consider the audience. Change any parts that are too difficult or confusing. Change any parts that are too simple. Don't insult your audience's intelligence. Try to make any dull parts more interesting. Be sure your speech is interesting and suitable for your audience. Refine the descriptive language. Be sure each passage is accurate. Be sure each passage is expressed in the clearest, most descriptive language possible. Remember to follow steps 2-4 above after you have written the first draft.
