Why does it make you a better leader to acknowledge your mistakes rather than try to hide them?

It shows honesty when you admit you are in error. To dispute an allegation that is not correct is one thing. To commit something that is not right is another. It is better to admit the error and move on. When people bring it up, the sting is not noticed so much because it is "old news." Their attitude becomes "We know that. Can we go on?"

With all the fuss and feathers that Trump is creating, what exactly has he accomplished? How many people really care? Even if he is right (which is questionable), how many people believe he has their interests at heart? A dedicated reformer has a way of reaching out hearts and minds. Part of their tool kit contains  the ability to admit error.

It makes you a better Leader because if you acknowledge your mistakes and you have a conscious and you can admit your mistakes then that is a great thing, I wish I could be like that, I hide my mistakes a lot, you need to admit your mistakes or it will be bad for you.
