In Homer's Iliad, we see two major motifs: Armor becomes an independent character in the epic poem. It is capable of devotion, betrayal, and solidarity. This can be seen through Patroclus' decision to steal Achilles' armor and the aftermath of this decision.

Armor

Achilles’s armor was a reoccurring object throughout the epic poetry. Homer put a lot of emphasis into the armor as almost having a life of its own. It seemed like the armor favored and had Achilles’s spirits. When Achilles wore his armor he was invincible, and yet when other people such as Patroclus wore the armor, it led them to their deaths. In general, the armor was deemed as an object of invincibility throughout the poem.

Burial

The Greek culture as a whole stressed honor and proper burial. Burial was important in the Iliad because it also came to represent humane side of Achilles and a temporary stop to his anger. Burial also came to symbolize the vulnerability of life which is actually a theme of the poetry.
