Example
Quote: Hang thee young baggage, disobedient wretch! I tell thee what, get thee to church o' Thursday, Or never after look me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me. My fingers itch. Wife, we scarce thought us blest That God had lent us but this only child, But now I see this one is one too much, And that we have a curse in having her. (Capulet, Act 3 Scene 5)

Who said it: Juliet’s father Capulet says this quote.

Context: Her father is enraged with Juliet because she refuses to marry Paris.

Why is it important: This scene is significant because it characterizes Juliet’s father as inflexible and demanding of his daughter’s obedience. His tone is angry, hostile, and even abusive as is evident when he calls her a ‘disobedient wretch’ and essentially disowns Juliet for refusing to marry Paris. The scene will push Juliet to end ties with her family and into the arms Romeo, and eventually her death.

Quotes to choose from:
“O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady o’er her fellows shows. The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand, And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” Act 1, Scene 5

“These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume: the sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness And in the taste confounds the appetite: Therefore love moderately; long love doth so; Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.” Act 2, Scene 6

“No, ’tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church-door; but ’tis enough, ’twill serve: ask for me to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man. I am peppered, I warrant, for this world. A plague o’ both your houses! ’Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat, to scratch a man to death! a braggart, a rogue, a villain, that fights by the book of arithmetic! Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.” Act 3, Scene 1

“Well, think of marriage now. Younger than you here in Verona, ladies of esteem are made already mothers. By my count, I was your mother much upon these years that you are now a maid. Thus then, in brief, the valiant Paris seeks you for his love.” Act 1 Scene 3
