Read this passage, noting the connotations of words. Scoliosis curves your spine into an S, a biological scarlet letter glaringly visible by X-
ray but also perceptible to the naked eye. The upper half of my spine had bowed to
the right as I hit puberty while the lower half curved left. Scoliosis was a threat
never knew to anticipate.
