Danielle avowed to never again let her children's antics affect her sanity. Too often, the twins' competitive banter turned into fighting, to the detriment of Danielle's own well-being. Even when they got along– though these periods of temporary truce were far from bountiful– they were enterprising in their determination to cause utter chaos. Danielle once came home from work to find the kitchen flooded and the twins knee-deep in sudsy water, the sink faucet still running. "We wanted to take a bath in the kitchen, Mama!" They'd said, giggling. Ever since the considerable home repairs that followed– luckily, the floors were durable enough that they didn't have to be completely replaced– Danielle had had to be even more frugal than usual. She didn't even take the twins to the hospital when they started getting congested, running low fevers, and vomiting; instead, she gingerly stroked their backs and passed a trash can between them in case they needed it. When it turned out to be the flu (and a nurse furiously asked her why she hadn't thought to bring her feverish children to the hospital earlier), she sat in the waiting room, wondering why she ever thought having children would be easy.
