A "foil" is a character whose attributes contrast with and therefore accentuate the main character's attributes. In Sections 37-44 of "The Gift of the Magi," Jim is shown as a foil for Della in that A. Della goes from an "ecstatic scream" to "hysterical tears," while Jim sits on the couch and smiles. B. Della likes expensive combs, but Jim would never buy anything costly like that. C. Della has remorse about cutting her hair for Jim's fob, while Jim is angry they wasted their money.
