My English class had an adventure yesterday. As the students sat, quietly revising their drafts, one girl shrieked with terror. "A mouse!" she cried. "It's under my desk." Immediately
his/her
everybody in the room jumped on their chair. Soon somebody in the back of the room swore
he/she
they saw a large mouse, maybe even a rat, running along the baseboard. This new sighting
STAPTES
brought more excitement. “Does anybody have a box or book bag?" asked one resourceful
helshe
student. "Somebody could empty the box or bag. Then they could use it to trap the mouse." Just
as this suggestion was made, the mouse decided to make another dash around the room. Now
everybody snatched their belongings off the floor so that the rodent would not hide in them.
Nobody knew what to do. Even our instructor was left without a way to restore order. "Let's
finish class early today," he said. We all filed cautiously out of the room. No one considered the
class that comes after ours. They would have to deal with the mouse on their own.
