The music Jonas heard was perhaps only an echo.

Explanation:

Jonas and Gabriel die because they lost his hope for what they thought to be Elsewhere. They said,"... they were waiting for him;and they were waiting, too, for the baby" (p178-179)   which makes me think they died.
