Sarah Breedlove, an African American woman better known as Madame C. J. Walker, founded her own business in the first decade of 1900. Within 15 years she was a millionaire—the first black woman to attain that achievement. What propelled Breedlove along her road to success was what you might call a disastrous hair day! She developed a scalp problem and lost patches of hair. She was ashamed of her appearance and, in her embarrassment, she began mixing and experimenting with hair products to find a cure. In the process, she discovered not only the source of her future company but her skill as a businesswoman. In 1905, Breedlove married Charles Joseph Walker. She took his name—initials and all—and began producing “Madame Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower.” Soon she had a line of hair care products for African American women and was presenting them door-to-door. She visited with women in their homes, demonstrating her products and always looking for new ways to sell them. Madame Walker was the picture of hard work and industry, and before long her business was thriving. At the high point of Walker’s success, more than 3,000 people, many of them women, were dependent on her for employment, and Walker supported them with good jobs. What background information could help you link the causes and effects in the passage? a film on Sarah Breedlove’s childhood an article on chemical hair processing a multimedia presentation on selling products door-to-do
