Review the stanza that begins at the bottom of page 3 and continues to page 4 lines 37-51).
What is the effect of the author's use of
personification to describe the wind?
From "Paul Revere's Ride"
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The wind seems ghostly, and Revere's friend is
mesmerized for a moment.
The wind appears mighty, and Revere's friend
begins to lose courage.
He said to his friend. "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
of the North Church tower as a signal light-
One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm
For the country folk to be up and to arm,
The wind seems vengeful, and Revere's friend
begins to become uneasy.
The wind appears stoic, and Revere's friend starts
to feel empowered
