While in school, you need to build a portfolio of sketches of your own designs. You do not have to be a master artist, just be able to draw enough to show would-be clients what you can do and where your ideas are going. One way around being a good artist is to clothe a mannequin with your designs and take pictures. Another use of your portfolio is to show it to potential fashion houses for possible internships. Deciding which avenue to take will be important at this time. Do you want to be a fashion designer, which encompasses all aspects of design, or do you want to be a designer that specializes in either clothing, or footwear, or accessories? At the end of the last semester of school, it is typical to show off your collection on a runway for all to see.
