Sorting clothes into the "keepers" and "donations" piles was a much easier task for Alicia than it was for her older sister, Alicia was growing like a weed, as her mother was fond of saying. She couldn't squeeze into the clothes that fit her two months ago, much less a year ago. Her sister
might agonize over parting with each article of clothing, but for Alicia it meant making room for pants long enough to cover her legs and sleeves
that actually reached her wrists. Besides, the task was helping keep her mind off of her grandmother not being nearby this winter. Alicia also
enjoyed knowing someone else would wear and appreciate her favorite donated outfits. Next week, her castaways would be a part of someone's
new wardrobe.
Alicia pulled open the top dresser drawer and slid both arms in to scoop out the clothes. She laid the neatly folded stacks of shirts and
sweaters on her bed. She lifted the first top from the stack, unfolded it, and held it up to her body. Too short, she thought. She refolded the sweater
and placed it in the box. She continued with the rest of the shirts and sweaters, each one receiving a quick trial and verdict, until only one sweater
remained on the bed. Alicia picked up the fuzzy, pink sweater and rubbed it gently across her cheek. Gran had given her that sweater just before
she moved away. She remembered the first time she tried the sweater on. "I looked all over to find the perfect yarn to knit that sweater for you,"
Gran had said. "I made a good choice, because that color looks lovely on you."
Alicia slipped the sweater on. The sleeves were too short and the shoulders were much too tight. She took the sweater off and carefully
folded it before returning it to the dresser drawer. "Keeper," she whispered, as she slid the drawer shut.

On november 17, 1968, football fans across the united states sat glued to their televisions. a close game between two top teams—the new york jets and the oakland raiders—was being broadcast. when the jets pulled ahead with only fifty seconds remaining, viewers went wild. but then, just as the raiders were bringing the ball across midfield, the game disappeared from the screen! in its place, a previously scheduled children's movie, heidi, started playing. callers flooded the tv network's phone lines, but it was too late. the raiders scored two touchdowns in the very final moments—touchdowns that were unseen by all but west coast viewers. as a result of the interrupted event, dubbed "the heidi game," television networks began delaying their regularly scheduled programs until football games had ended.
