Ponnyboy is the protagonist and narrator of the book and for this reason, we have access to many of his thoughts, about the situations in which he is living and about the doubts he has about this kind of life. Ponnyboy can't recognize himself within the environment he lives in, he finds himself out of place in this world and without personality, we can see this through the excerpt "I lie to myself all the time.
