Analyzing the cause-and-effect relationships within a text can help us to better evaluate the author’s theme. In thinking about the theme of Antigone, consider the choices each character makes. Antigone buries Polyneices in spite of Creon’s edict. Creon enforces his law in spite of his relationship with his niece. What led them to these actions, and what effect did each of these actions have on the outcome of the drama? What message was Sophocles attempting to convey to the audience? These are the questions you need to consider as you work toward an evaluation of theme.

Compose a journal entry evaluating the theme of Antigone. Use the knowledge you have gained from exploring the cause/effect relationships in the play to help defend your evaluation. Include direct quotes from the text to support your arguments.
