As the guide-dog trainer stood ready with the leash, he knew it was going to be a difficult day. Lucky had trained well in just a few short months. She had learned how to obey commands and focus on her work. Sam and Lucky had hardly spent a moment apart for the last sixteen months. Sam stroked Lucky’s back and hugged her. “Be a good girl, now, and remember everything I taught you. Someday, you’re going to take care of someone special who really needs you.” Lucky licked Sam’s hand as if to show that she understood and to say good-bye. Giving up Lucky would be tough, but Sam knew he was doing the right thing. Which strategies did you use to help you understand the passage? Explain your answers.
