We picked up our rental car late that night when we arrived at the airport and stopped for hamburgers before going on to our destination. When we left the restaurant, Dave noticed a car behind us. Watching through the rearview mirror, he made several turns, and the car stayed with us, close to our bumper. He gave a left turn signal and turned into the empty parking lot of a well-lighted shopping center. The car followed us, still close. "We've got trouble," Dave said. Remembering the location of the police station from our last trip, we decided to go there and blow our horn as loud as we could. The other driver, probably realizing where we were headed, turned off and sped away just before we got there. We've talked about some things that we could have done to prevent such a thing from happening and ways to get ourselves out of danger should it happen again. Having an out-of-state automobile tag and appearing to be lost when we were driving around made us seem like an easy target. We don't want to think about danger when we travel, but we need to have a plan for preventing danger and a plan for escaping if we do find ourselves in a dangerous situation.

Read the following excerpt from life on the mississippi by mark twain. no girl could withstand his charms. he "cut out" every boy in the village. when his boat blew up at last, it diffused a tranquil contentment among us such as we had not known for months. but when he came home the next week, alive, renowned, and appeared in church all battered up and bandaged, a shining hero, stared at and wondered over by everybody, it seemed to us that the partiality of providence for an undeserving reptile had reached a point where it was open to criticism. how does twain's use of understatement serve his purpose? be sure to use specific details from the text to support your answer.

Read the following passage: he roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. the pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue— but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. the once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance. there were times, indeed, when i thought his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage. which of the above ideas might be considered foreshadowing? he is wandering all over the chamber his skin tone is really pale his voice is quivering the narrator thinks he is laboring with an oppressive secret
