*TKAM Sometimes in works of fiction, authors use characters to represent certain perspectives in society.

Instead of asking who a character is, we might ask what values and beliefs each character represents. Thinking about the characters who participated in the Tom Robinson trial—Atticus, Judge Taylor, Mr. Gilmer, Heck Tate, Bob Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson—what value or belief do you think each represents? How do these characters represent the tensions in the “moral universe” of the American South in the 1930s? Which voices in Maycomb society are not represented?
