Not long after the Hindenburg crash-landed, people began conjecturing as to why this magnificent airship was destroyed in the blink of an eye. Theories have been proposed that blame lightning, its shiny skin, sabotage, static electricity, and even angry farmers shooting at the noisy monster scaring their cows. To this day, the National Hydrogen Society, which promotes hydrogen as a fossil fuel alternative, continues to insist that the highly flammable hydrogen gas that kept the Hindenburg afloat did not turn it into a hovering time bomb. The simple fact remains that only one thing brought this ship down— its use of hydrogen gas. It is extremely flammable and even mixing with oxygen will cause it to explode into billowing flames.
