Most of us have read Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Once upon a time people believed (46) mermaids and mermen really existed. These creatures were said (47) half human and half fish.     Sailors sometimes told tales of hearing strange singing while far (54) at sea and having seen these creatures sitting on rocks and washing (55) or just sunbathing. Zoologists, however, are of the opinion that (56) creatures that the sailor saw and heard (57) really sea mammals. Water creatures (58) as sea lions, manatees and dugongs may have helped (59) rise to the idea of semi-human sprites living in the sea.
