Use the notes in your graphic organizer to start brainstorming about how to represent this information in an infographic. Select at least five pieces of key information from the article. For each, decide how to best represent it visually (diagrams, charts and graphs, timelines, maps, or any other visual representation of information). Type out your five pieces of information and your ideas for visual representation. Submit your notes for your instructor to review, and keep a copy for yourself. here is the article: Four teenage girls from Africa have figured out how to use urine as fuel for an electric generator. Fifteen-year-old Bello Eniola and 14-year-old Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin created a generator that can produce six hours of electricity from one liter of urine and demonstrated their invention at Maker Faire Africa in Lagos, Nigeria.

The blog on the makerfaireafrica. com website explains how the generator works:
Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
The use of hydrogen does pose an explosion risk, which the girls minimized by using one way valves throughout the device.

There have been other successful attempts at using urine as fuel, but the girls’ invention will be useful for many households in Nigeria, where power outages are a daily occurrence and many homes have generators.

Gerardine Botte is an Ohio University professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering who has been working on finding ways to make urine a practical and useful source of energy. She says that using urine as fuel is inefficient, but that the young women deserve credit for their invention.

Botte’s research is focused on using urine to create drinking water. Converting urine into potable water also releases hydrogen, which can then be used to help generate electricity. Botte’s company is called E3 Clean Technologies, and their Green Box Technology is being tested by the U. S. Department of Defense at remote military bases.
The need is great for this type of technology. There is even hope that this technology will be used to fuel cars someday.
