Many people may ask, what is literature? And Connie Wills constructed an amazing response, "That's what literature is. It’s the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them! This response shows how literature is a way of communicating knowledge from the past to the present time, and how literature is very powerful. This quote can also be applied to many other pieces of literature. Some examples are “The Giver”, and “Fahrenheit 451”.

This quote can be applied in the novel “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. In the book, they showed a world where people’s memories and knowledge from the past or any bad things like death were all erased and told it was for their benefit because the government was trying to keep peace and didn’t want anyone, with strong emotions to go against the government. In this novel, there was only one person that was allowed to have the memories and they obtained those memories from literature, this person known as the Giver provides the memories to the next receiver. This quote can be applied perfectly to “The Giver” because it shows how literature is the way our ancestors speak to us and teach us about the past, life, and death.

Another way this quote can be applied to “The Giver”, is by showing the power of literature. The quote by Wills shows how literature is truly very powerful. The way this can be applied to “The Giver” is by showing how they only let one person have the knowledge. This shows how literature is impactful because there would be too much power if all of the citizens knew all the things only the Giver is allowed to know and might cause a revolution against the government. Another great example that fits the quote by Wills is the book “Fahrenheit 451”.

Will’s quote can also be applied to the novel “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. In this book the government has the firefighters burn down the houses that contain books or of anybody that had been seen with a book. They do this to control and minimize the power of the citizens against the government. This applies to the quote by Wills by showing how the power in the knowledge that is obtained from literature is very strong and feared in this novel.

The quote by Will shows how literature can display many things. Literature gives us knowledge on pretty much anything you can think about. Literature gives you power in knowledge. “The Giver” and “Fahrenheit 451” are two novels that show how much power and knowledge literature can provide. Literature should never be taken for granted because it is “the people who went before us, tapping out messages from the past, from beyond the grave, trying to tell us about life and death! Listen to them!” (Connie Wills).
