Read It! After Henry Hudson arrived at the island of Manhattan, Dutch settlers established a trading post there. In 1625, the settlers bought the land from Native Americans. They called the village New Amsterdam. Pieter Schaghen, a Dutch government representative, conducted the transaction. In a letter, he noted the island's name as "Manna Hatta." He paid 60 guilders worth of goods. Schaghen gave knives, pots, kettles, blankets, shells, and other trinkets as payment. This famous letter is in a Dutch museum today.
