In 'The lottery' by Shirley Jackson, the telling tone of the narrator serves the purpose of making the reader feel a certain mood. Throughout the story, it seems that it is a normal day and situations flow along with the retelling that is why, the ending is so shocking and unexpected. The reader is not expecting such an ending because of the soft tone of the facts previously told. This drastic ending helps the aim of themes which may be follow tradition blindly, persecution as well as cruelty and injustice from society.

The theme about cruelty and injustice highlighted by this tone is that

unhealthy tradition can cause pain

The tone used by the narrator in this story is strange to me because the story began as a very innocent tale but suddenly digressed to being a horrific story. That is quite unusual.

A reader will not even guess from the onset of the story that the stones being used by the children to play was meant to be used in executing the winner of the lottery- Tessie Hutchinson.

The entire story shows that cruelty and injustice are imbedded in some traditions. These unhealthy traditions should be abolished.
