"to all the earlmen after evenlight's glimmer
'neath heaven's bright hues hath hidden its glory.
this my earls then urged me, the most excellent of them,
carles very clever, to come and assist thee,
folk-leader hrothgar; fully they knew of
the strength of my body."

Beowulf tells king Hrothgar that even such a glorious hall as Heorot was deprived of its glory because of Grendel's terror, and he is going to stop this now. Therefore, he puts himself in line with something as great as a castle. As soon as he heard the story about Grendel, he set off with his warriors to come here, find and kill him. The earls urged him to assist the king because they were aware how strong he was. Apparently, only a man so strong and courageous can kill Grendel. Those are heroic, almost superhuman qualities that Beowulf boasts about now. He will prove them before long.
