Diction is the author's word choice. A writer uses specific words when creating an image to put a precise picture in the reader's mind. Simply saying the weather was rainy may not accurately convey an image. Instead an author may say: The soft rain danced on the wind creating a fairy-like atmosphere as the sun's orange and gold rays dipped below the horizon. The diction also affects the tone. In the previous example the use of the words "soft", "danced" and "fairy-like" give it a positive ephemeral tone. If those words were "heavy" "pounded" "treacherous", the tone becomes more negative and dangerous. The diction does not determine the theme. It can add to it or help the reader better identify the theme, but it is not the determiner of theme.
