Nation states acquire status as independent, sovereign nations when they are recognized by other nation states. For example, when Palestine has been recognized as a nation state despite its dismemberment by Israel, its' government  establishes itself as a key part of the ephemeral peace accords and deserves to be treated with respect by Israel with an equal voice in the relations between the two countries. Also, Palestine can then vote in the UN General Assembly on matters such as the blockade against Cuba or similar international affairs.
