Which sentence in this excerpt from leo tolstoy’s the death of ivan ilyich exhibits the interconnected themes of morality and mortality? "yes, i am making them wretched," he thought. "they are sorry, but it will be better for them when i die." he wished to say this but had not the strength to utter it. "besides, why speak? i must act," he thought. with a look at his wife he indicated his son and said: "take him for for you " he tried to add, "forgive me," but said "forego" and waved his hand, knowing that he whose understanding mattered would understand. and suddenly it grew clear to him that what had been oppressing him and would not leave him was all dropping away at once from two sides, from ten sides, and from all sides. he was sorry for them, he must act so as not to hurt them: release them and free himself from these sufferings. "how good and how simple! " he thought. "and the pain? " he asked himself. "what has become of it? where are you, pain? " he turned his attention to it. "yes, here it is. well, what of it? let the pain be." "and is it? " he sought his former accustomed fear of death and did not find it. "where is it? what death? " there was no fear because there was no death. in place of death there was light.

Read this excerpt from through the looking-glass by lewis carroll. "you might make a joke on that,” said the little voice close to her ear: "something about ‘you would if you could,’ you know.” "don't tease so,” said alice, looking about in vain to see where the voice came from; "if you're so anxious to have a joke made, why don't you make one yourself? ” the little voice sighed deeply: it was very unhappy, evidently, and alice would have said something pitying to comfort it, "if it would only sigh like other people! ” she thought. but this was such a wonderfully small sigh, that she wouldn't have heard it at all, if it hadn't come quite close to her ear. the consequence of this was that it tickled her ear very much, and quite took off her thoughts from the unhappiness of the poor little creature. what question should a reader ask to clarify what is happening in the story? who or what is the voice speaking to alice? when will alice attempt to share a joke? what secret will alice share with the new character? why do whispers tickle the listener?
