After listening to the radio broadcast of the war of the worlds, why were some people living in bergen county, new jersey, convinced the attack was real?

The radio program "The War of the Worlds" was very effective that it caused so much problem to the listeners that they taught that the alien invasion is real in New Jersey.  The broadcast of the program was performed as a Halloween episode. The sound effects are very realistic.
