april 25. even the morning air is sultry today. i would have fished for my breakfast last night before sunset, but i knew that it would surely spoil before morning. drinking my water warm has taken some getting used to. it’s funny how we take certain things like ice for granted. if i become desperate i can always resort to eating the freeze dried rations, but that defeats my purpose for being here to begin with. besides, they are about as edible as the tough, dry bark in a long dead tree. i think i have almost learned to track the time by the rays of the sun. time, like water, seems to sit in a pot unable to boil if your eye isn’t constantly on it. time seems to be the only thing that man hasn’t learned to control; but i am sure some genius like fred johnson is currently working on it, while sitting in a cubicle checking the four thousand emails on his palm pilot. as for me, i think i will lean back on this dune and nap a while before i head out to catch some lunch.

What can you infer about how the particular events in "the memoirs of the conquistador bernal del diaz de castillo" still affected the writer at the time of writing his memoir? he thinks of his dead crewmen with sadness and regrets that they died for nothing. he is still frustrated that one of his men accidentally kills himself by drinking too much water.  he thinks wistfully about the wealth he may have enjoyed if they had found gold in the yucatan.  he still considers indians liars.

Read the excerpt from david foster wallace’s infinite jest. my silent response to the expectant silence begins to affect the air of the room, the bits of dust and sportcoat-lint stirred around by the ac’s vents dancing jaggedly in the slanted plane of windowlight, the air over the table like the sparkling space just above a fresh-poured seltzer. the coach, in a slight accent neither british nor australian, is telling c.t. that the whole application-interface process, while usually just a pleasant formality, is probably best accentuated by letting the applicant speak up for himself. in this excerpt, the narrator is providing a, both objective descriptions and subjective commentaries. b. only objective information about people, setting, and events. c. only subjective responses to the things he sees and experiences. d. a compromised interpretation of events due to his unstable condition.
