At the time the Declaration of Sentiments was written in 1848, the legal and socials status of women was different to men's. Women were seen as inferior to men as if they could not equal their intellectual capability. They did not have the right to vote, to participate in political decisions,  nor legislate (Many held that men in their lives already represented their political will); the women's rights to any type of possession were limited, and education was not a priority for them. They were often educated with the purpose of promoting religious instructions, and to later educate their children at home, but not to pursue a career.

The society also believed and promoted the idea that women belonged to their homes, where they can educate and take care of the offspring, serve her husband and do household duties. Women's duty was to procreate and to enhance the social status of her husband or men in the family, according to their situation.
