Is the emotional release felt by the audience of a tragedy.

The answer is: Catharsis.

The word comes from the Greek, meaning “purification” or “cleansing”. Aristotle uses it in his Poetics to mean the emotional state brought upon the audience from cleansing or purifying the emotions of pity or fear raised by different art forms, particularly the scenic arts, as developed by characters (on stage).
