Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 and died on July 2, 1961. He was an American journalist, novelist, and short-story writer. He had a strong influence on the 20th-century fiction. His adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short-story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three of his novels, four short story collections, and three non-fiction works were published after his dead. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature. But perhaps the best of his works is “the Old man and The Sea” where he represents the lonely fight a fisherman had to put against his catch. Most of his works were inspired in his adventurous life style: fishing, hunting, mountaineering, etc.

The short story “In Another Country” is about an ambulance military member in Milan during World War I. Even though he is not given a name overtly, he is assumed to be "Nick Adams", a character Hemingway made to represent himself. He has an injured knee and visits a hospital daily for rehabilitation. There the "machines" are used to speed the healing, with the doctors making use of the miraculous new technology. They show pictures to the wounded of injuries like theirs healed by the machines, but the war-hardened soldiers are portrayed as skeptical, perhaps understandably so.
