Define the ballad form and explain the difference between a literary ballad and a folk ballad

A ballad is a poem that often tells a story, has a rhyme scheme of abab, and often used in quatrains (a stanza of four lines).  A folk ballad is passed down orally through generations with a vague source, and a literary ballad is written with a known author.
