At the end of section 4, it discusses how a man was condemned to death by hanging for theft. Theft is against the morals of most people. He did it in order to try and get something that would prolong his life.

In section 5 it discusses how it is the Jewish holiday of Yom-Kippur. For this holiday, you are supposed to fast (not eat from a designated time). Elies father didn't want him to fast because he would grow weak without eating the little food that he was given to do the work that he was required to do.

In section 5 it also discusses the selection. A man came in and told the men that they should run in order to put color on. Even though they were tired, they ran in order to look healthier.

In section 5 it also discusses how Elie's father must stay behind for a second selection in order to determine whether he will die or not. He talks to Elie. Elie must leave and then his father runs after the group but can't catch up. If Elie had broken away from the ranks to hear what could have been his fathers last words to him, he most likely would have been beaten and maybe even killed for disobeying orders.

In section 5, Elie's foot injury opens again. He believes that if he stays behind, that he will be killed. He tears off some blanket to wrap around his foot to try and make it more bearable to walk on because he doesn't want to die. Even though he will be cold, he knows that he must stop the bleeding.

In section 5, Elie is growing hungry but he knows that he won't get anymore food so he must not eat it yet since that is his only food until he gets to wherever the German army is taking them.

In section 6, it says ""Make an effort, Zalman... Try..." "I can't go on," he groaned. He lowered his pants and fell to the ground. That is the image I have of him. I don't believe that he was finished off by an SS, for nobody had noticed. He must have died, trampled under the feet of the thousands of men who followed us. I soon forgot him. I began to think of myself again." Elie wanted to try and help his friend but if he stopped then he would be killed.

In section 6, it says ""It happened on the road. We lost sight of one another during the journey. I fell a little, behind at the rear of the column I didn't have the strength to run anymore. and my son didn't notice. That's all I know..." ... His son had seen him loosing ground, sliding to the back of the rear column. He had seen him. And he continued to run in front, letting the distance between them become greater. A terrible thought crossed my mind: what if he had wanted to be rid of his father? He had felt his father growing weaker and, believing that the end was near, had thought to free himself of a burden that could diminish his own chance for survival." This shows how people are growing less of a concern for their family even though it is all they have left. Family becomes a burden and makes it more difficult to watch out for yourself.
